Three Main Types of Solar Systems
Grid Tied
A solar system that is connected to the local utility. The PV system generates power which is consumed onsite. Excess power is sent back to the electrical grid. If the grid goes down ie a blackout, the solar system will shut down.
Grid Tied with Backup
A solar system which links to the utility and feeds excess power back to the local utility. If the power were to go out, a backup power source such as a generator or a solar system batteries will provide power to the entire house or to the defined critical loads.
Off Grid
A solar system that does not connect to the local utility. Power to the home is supplied by a combination of renewable power such as solar or wind with batteries, non-renewable power sources such as a propane fueled generator, or a combination for example of solar and a generator.
